When Lunacy Masquerades as Reason Saturday, March 28, 2009 was designated “Earth Hour,” and people around the world were encouraged to turn off the lights in their houses from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. in a symbolic gesture to show concern for the Earth in her current global climate crisis. It seemed a logical effort, one that could be supported, within reason, by all people worldwide.
Who would not want to make such a minor sacrifice? Surely nobody, not even those who preferred not to comply with such a request, could object to it. Think again. A man here in my hometown wrote to the local newspaper to say that he would protest Earth Hour by switching on every light in his house at the designated time. This lunacy is a form of thought all too common today, a contrarian reaction to any movement whose goal is the betterment of the common good. In the United States, for instance, a vocal minority exists that opposes any proposal by environmentalists to act in a responsible manner toward nature.
This anti-environmental minority not only speaks out in opposition to environmental activism, but is downright suspicious of any group that acts to improve our ecosystem. And if that group in any way blames humankind for our current environmental degradation, the anti-environmentalists are even more adamant in their attacks.
These anti-environmentalists will employ ludicrous arguments to bolster their case. If there is such a thing as Global Warming, they ask, why is there a blizzard in North Dakota right now? The Earth is too big for puny human beings to have a lasting effect on her, they maintain. Scientists say we have gone through climate changes before, why is the current one any different? The amazing thing about these people is that they are common citizens with no vested interest in acting against common sense.
You could understand their arguments if these anti-environmentalists were involved in the auto industry, the oil industry, or industries that harvest and use Earth’s natural resources because measures taken to protect the environment endanger their business.
These people cannot be approached through reason; they are ideologues who have been brainwashed to believe as they do. In fact, they are against education, too, preferring to repeat “talking points” they have memorized from others in their group.
They choose not to argue rationally because they are often tripped up by superior thinking. They are dangerous because they are highly susceptible to propaganda and they can be coerced into destructive behavior.
If the Earth is going to survive, it will do so because rational individuals have banded together to act for the common good. They will find a way to teach children at a very young age that human beings are the caretakers of the planet, that all the plants and animals she supports are dependent for their survival on thinking, caring people.

Quando si scambia la pazzia per ragione Sabato 28 marzo 2009 è stata designata “L’ora della Terra” e la gente di tutto il mondo veniva invitata a spegnere le luci in casa, dalle 8:30 alle 9:30 del pomeriggio, in un gesto simbolico, atto a mostrare interesse per la terra nell’attuale, globale crisi climatica. Questo è apparso come uno sforzo logico, che potrebbe essere sostenuto universalmente, in limiti ragionevoli, da tutta la gente. Chi non vorrebbe fare un sacrificio così piccolo? Certamente nessuno e, neppure quelli, che hanno preferito non aderire ad una tale richiesta, potrebbero obiettare. Pensate un pò. Un uomo qui, nella mia città, ha scritto al giornale locale, per dire che avrebbe contestato “L’ora della Terra”, accendendo tutte le luci in casa sua, all’ora designata. Questa pazzia è una forma di pensiero troppo comune oggigiorno: una reazione contraria ad ogni movimento, il cui obiettivo sia il miglioramento del bene comune. Negli Stati Uniti, per esempio esiste una minoranza verbale, che si oppone a tutte le proposte degli ecologisti di agire in modo responsabile verso la natura. Questa minoranza anti-ambientale non solo parla in opposizione all’attivismo ambientale, ma è completamente sospettoso di qualsiasi gruppo, che agisce per migliorare il nostro ecosistema. E se quel gruppo incolpa, in ogni modo, l'umanità per il corrente degrado ambientale, gli anti-ambientalisti sono ancora più risoluti nei loro attacchi. Questi anti-ambientalisti useranno i loro ridicoli ragionamenti, per sostenere le loro ragioni. Se c’è una cosa simile, come il surriscaldamento globale, essi si chiedono, perché c’è una bufera di neve nel North Dakota, proprio ora? Essi sostengono che la terra è troppo grande, piccoli esseri umani, per poter avvertire su di sè un effetto durevole. Gli scienziati dicono che già in precedenza siamo passati attraverso cambiamenti climatici, e allora perché quello attuale è così diverso? La cosa stupefacente di questa gente è che si tratta di cittadini comuni, senza specifici interessi, nel comportarsi contro il buon senso. Si potrebbero capire le loro discussioni, se questi anti-ambientalisti fossero legati all'industria automobilistica, all'industria petrolifera o alle industrie, che raccolgono ed usano le risorse naturali della terra, se le misure adottate, per proteggere l'ambiente, mettesserno in pericolo i loro affari. Queste persone non sentono ragioni; sono ideologi, ai quali è stato fatto il lavaggio del cervello, per credere in quello che fanno. Infatti, essi sono anche contro l’istruzione, preferendo ripetere “gli argomenti di conversazione” che hanno memorizzato dagli altri del loro gruppo. Essi scelgono di non discutere razionalmente, perché spesso inciampano in pensieri superiori. Sono pericolosi, perché sono altamente suscettibili alla propaganda e possono essere indotti a comportamenti distruttivi. Se la terra riuscirà a sopravvivere, ciò avverrà solo perché degli individui ragionnevoli si sono messi insieme, per comportarsi a favore del bene comune. Essi troveranno un modo, per insegnare ai bambini, fin dalla tenera età, che gli esseri umani sono i guardiani del pianeta e che tutte le piante e gli animali, che essa sostiene, dipendono, per la loro sopravvivenza, da gente reflessiva e altruista.
