Reality TV: The “Dumbing Down” of America I can honestly say that I have viewed only a few minutes of the so-called “Reality TV” shows--a remarkable feat considering that these shows have multiplied like rabbits over recent years. In fact, it seems as if Reality TV dominates television these days, and it is often difficult to find other, more substantive, programs worth watching. Do not misunderstand me; I am not an elitist who believes it is undignified to watch television. I view my share of stupid TV shows. But I find nothing realistic about Reality TV, and I find tedious the conversations that these programs generate in the general populace. Moreover, I believe that these mindless shows directly contribute to an overriding dullness in the minds of their American audience.
There is a legitimate place in the world of television for entertainment, and there is a place for educational shows. But on American TV over the past decade entertainment has proliferated, to the detriment of other offerings, even the daily news. Situational comedies (sitcoms) have multiplied, and the only thing they seem to have in common is that they all have become dumber and more outrageous. Because the number one goal of this type of programming is to attract viewers, TV producers on rival networks compete to produce wildly unrealistic shows that will generate a “buzz” in the viewership.
There are, perhaps, one hundred Reality TV shows whose unrealistic premises require nothing more of viewers than to park themselves in front of the television set to watch mind-numbing images that require no thought.
For some people these shows are the equivalent of a narcotic, hooking viewers who cannot stop watching. The following is a partial list of American Reality TV shows: "The Amazing Race, American Idol, America’s Got Talent, America’s Next Top Model, The Apprentice, Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader?, Average Joe, The Bachelor, Big Brother, The Biggest Loser, Dancing With The Stars, Joe Millionaire, Last Comic Standing, The Nanny, Queer Eye For The Straight Guy, The Real World, Survivor, Temptation Island, Who Wants To Marry My Dad?" The themes for some of these shows have been borrowed from other countries, and other countries have often borrowed liberally from American TV. The British and the Americans often have similar Reality TV shows. Even Italy has “Grande Fratello,” which was patterned after the American show “Big Brother.” At least in Italy, however, there was an attempt to slow the Reality TV tsunami. Claudio Petruccioli, president of RAI, wanted to eliminate reality shows in favor of creative cultural programs. (Perhaps he had in mind something akin to the brilliant The Best of Youth [La Meglio Gioventù], an RAI production, which won the prestigious jury prize in the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival in 2003.) But the ongoing popularity of shows like “La Sposa Perfetta” and “L’isola dei Famosi” prove that even the Italian population is susceptible to Reality TV.
Reality TV shows are relatively inexpensive to produce and they are extremely popular because they appeal to people’s vulgar instincts: lust, greed, and the need to berate other people and to take pleasure in their failures. The proliferation of these shows is an ominous sign for the direction in which American society is moving, a symptom of a certain psychic laxity. There is a saying in America: “The mind is like a muscle; the more you use it, the stronger it becomes.” I am afraid that the sheer number of Reality TV shows means that the American viewing public is growing ever more weak-minded.

Posso onestamente dire che guardo poco, solo per qualche minuto, i cosiddetti programmi dei "Reality TV" – che denotano una notevole abilità, considerando che questi spettacoli si sono proliferati come conigli, negli ultimi anni. Infatti, sembra che i Reality TV siano attualmente i programmi dominanti in televisione ed è spesso difficile trovare qualche altro programma più sostanzioso, degno di essere visto. Non fraintendetemi; non sono per un’èlite, che crede non sia dignitoso guardare la televisione. Anch’io ho la mia parte nell’assistere a stupidi spettacoli televisivi. Solo che non trovo niente di realistico nella Reality TV e ritengo stucchevoli le conversazioni che questi programmi provocano generalmente nel pubblico. Inoltre credo che questi spettacoli demenziali contribuiscano direttamente ad una predominante ottusità nelle menti dei telespettatori americani.
Nel mondo della televisione, c’è un apposito canale per l’intrattenimento e c’è un canale adatto per gli spettacoli istruttivi. Ma nella TV americana, nell’ultimo decennio, l'intrattenimento ha avuto una grande proliferazione, a detrimento delle altre proposte, persino dei notiziari quotidiani. Le commedie situazionali (sitcoms) si sono moltiplicate e l'unica cosa che sembrano avere in comune è che sono diventate tutte più insipide e più oltraggiose. Poiché il principale obiettivo di questo tipo di programmazione è di attirare i telespettatori, i produttori televisivi delle reti concorrenti sono in competizione tra loro, per produrre spettacoli spietatamente irrealistici, adatti a generare un "effetto mediatico" nell’utenza televisiva.
Probabilmente, ci sono centinaia di "spettacoli" di Reality TV, le cui premesse irrealistiche non richiedono ai telespettatori niente di più che starsene piazzati davanti al televisore, per guardare immagini che intorpidiscono la mente e che non richiedono l’intervento del pensiero.
Per alcune persone, questi spettacoli sono l'equivalente di un narcotico, pronto ad accalappiare gli spettatori che non possono fare a meno di rimanere a guardare. (Chi è Più Furbo di uno Studente della Classe Quinta?), Average Joe (Pino Ordinario), The Bachelor (Lo Scapolo), Big Brother (Il Grande Fratello), The Biggest Loser (Il Più Grande Perdente), Dancing With The Stars (Ballando Con Le Stelle), Joe Millionaire (Pino il Milionario), Last Comic Standing (L'Ultimo Comico), The Nanny (La Badante dei Bambini), Queer Eye For The Straight Guy (L’Occhio Del Gay Per L'Uomo Etero), The Real World (Il Mondo Reale), Survivor (Il Superstite), Temptation Island (L’Isola Delle Tentazioni), Who Wants To Marry My Dad? (Chi Vuole Sposare Il Mio Papà?)".
I temi di alcuni di questi spettacoli sono stati presi in prestito da altri paesi ed altre nazioni hanno spesso liberalmente attinto alla televisione americana. Inglesi ed Americani hanno spesso spettacoli simili di Reality TV. Anche l'Italia ha "Il Grande Fratello," che è stato modellato sul tipo dello show americano "Big Brother." Almeno in Italia, tuttavia, c’era un tentativo di rallentare il tornado della Reality TV. Claudio Petruccioli, presidente della RAI, voleva eliminare i Reality shows a favore dei creativi programmi culturali. (Forse aveva in mente qualcosa di analogo al brillante “The Best of Youth” [La Meglio Gioventù]: una produzione RAI, che ha vinto il premio prestigioso della giuria nella sezione “Un Certo Riguardo” del Film Festival a Cannes nel 2003.) La proliferazione di questi spettacoli è un segno di minaccia per la direzione in cui la società americana si sta muovendo, un sintomo di una certa pigrizia psichica. C’è un detto in America: "La mente è come un muscolo; più la usate, più si irrobustisce". Temo che il numero assoluto degli spettacoli di Reality TV significa che il pubblico televisivo americano stia diventando sempre più debole di mente.
